Welcome Juno! Toronto Zoo names its polar bear cub

Welcome Juno!

The Toronto Zoo’s adorable polar bear cub made her media debut on Thursday.

Born on Remembrance Day last year and named after Juno Beach, one of the most successful operations carried out on D-Day by the Canadian Forces, the cub has been officially adopted as the live mascot of the Canadian Army.

“We are proud and happy to adopt Juno into the army today and promote her immediately to the rank of Private,” Brigadier-General David Patterson said. “Like all good soldiers I’m sure she will work hard and advance in rank over the years. Eventually she could be known as Sgt. Juno or Cpt. Juno or perhaps even one day General Juno.”

Juno was one of two cubs delivered by Aurora, one of the zoo’s two female polar bears, in November. The second cub did not survive the first 24 hours.

Juno has been a hit online, with a video of her learning to walk at two months old garnering over 300,000 views on YouTube.

Members of the public can get their first look at her on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and again at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

It’s been a busy year at the Toronto Zoo maternity wards, with the birth of the giant panda twins — who will be named in the coming months.

The four white lion cubs named Oliver, Hank, Harrison and Gus.

And last week welcomed a baby rhinoceros, who has not yet been named.
