Homegrown is best: MPP calls for Ontario tomatoes in Queen’s Park ketchup

By News Staff

A petition is being circulated at Queen’s Park, calling on French’s ketchup to be the official condiment at the Ontario legislature.

Windsor-area MPP Taras Natyshak wants hospitality services to use French’s because it is made from tomatoes grown in Leamington, Ont.

“The ketchup being served in the dining room and cafeteria at Queen’s Park is currently not an Ontario product,” the petition reads.

“The promotion of French’s Ketchup would greatly support local tomato producers, local workers and communities across Essex County.”

Heinz used to be the largest employer in the small town before it closed its factory in June of 2014.

The move comes after a Facebook post by an Orillia man who said his family was switching to French’s, in a show of solidarity for Ontario workers.

The post has been shared nearly 130,000 times.
