Accused in York U sex assault back in court

By News Staff

The man accused of sexually assaulting a fellow York University student will appear in court on Monday.

Mustafa Ururyar is facing one count of sexual assault, Toronto police told Vice Media.

Mandi Gray, a York University graduate student, alleges Ururya, a fellow PhD candidate, assaulted her on Jan. 31, 2015. She has waived her right to a publication ban on her name.

The judge-alone trial began in February and is expected to continue Monday with further evidence being presented.

Ahead of the court appearance, protesters gathered outside Old City Hall courthouse to voice their concerns. Watch it below or click here if on mobile.

Gray has also launched a human-rights complaint against York, alleging the school’s sexual assault policy discriminates against women, who are most often victims. She said the policy lacks specific procedures for reporting assaults, forcing her to repeat her story to 12 staff members.

“There’s no way to have a great experience of your sexual assault being investigated,” she said in March. “But we can do better than what we’re doing.”
