Two people found dead in Whitby apartment building

Durham Regional Police are investigating the suspicious deaths of two females in a Whitby apartment.

Homicide detectives were summoned to the building on Hickory Street South near Dundas Street East and Brock Street South around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Police have not released the names, ages or relationship between the two but several people who describe themselves as friends of the deceased tell CityNews it was a single mother close to her 40’s and her daughter – about 6 or 7 years old. The two had been living at the apartment for less than a year.

“I just feel sorry. I feel sorry for the mom, for the daughter,” said Keeley Murphy, a resident of the building. “I’m just sad, it’s a sad situation.”

An impromptu memorial for the two began to form late Friday night. “You will be missed Paria and Sarah” was written in chalk on the sidewalk outside the building.

“We wanted to show that we miss her and her daughter, and that we still care for them very much. And we hope that she’s in a better place now.”

Police say an autopsy will be conducted over the weekend to determine the cause of death. They add there is no concern for public safety and no arrests are expected.
