Education Minister Mitzie Hunter has appointed two reviewers to investigate growing concerns about issues surrounding equality and governance at the York Region District School Board.
“Allegations of systemic racism, concerns about the board’s equity and inclusive education policies, accountability for spending on trustees’ international travel, and deteriorating relationships between the trustees, the director of education and the board’s senior staff,” all are a concern, Hunter said in a statement on Thursday.
Hunter says an urgent review is needed to look at the issues.
The two reviewers, former provincial deputy minister Sue Herbert and lawyer Patrick Case, will recommend improvements to restore public confidence in the board.
They’re expected to hand in a report by April 7.
In one case, school trustee Nancy Elgie acknowledged she used the “N” word when referring to the parent of a student. The board is also looking into the suspension and expulsion rates of minority students.
