Hate crime investigation launched over Your Ward News

By News Staff

A hate crime investigation is underway in connection with the controversial publication Your Ward News.

Toronto police said a number of residents the in the city’s north end have had it delivered to their homes.

Const. David Hopkinson said he wants to get the message out to concerned residents that they are looking into it.

“There’s, I believe, pictures of swastikas and other war images on it and especially in that community, which has a fairly large Jewish population, it’s not received very well,” he explained.

Last summer the federal government ordered Canada Post to stop delivering a controversial Toronto tabloid newspaper.

“It has been banned by the government of Canada for delivery by Canada Post,” Hopkinson said. “That publication has found its way to a number of the resident’s homes and it contains, what people are describing as, hate literature or hate speech.”

Your Ward News has been criticized for being homophobic, misogynistic and anti-Semitic.
