No complete Gardiner shutdown this spring but some closures for events

By News staff

It’s almost spring, and if you’re a driver who commutes into downtown Toronto, you’re likely bracing for what seems to be a yearly tradition — weekend closures of the Gardiner Expressway for annual maintenance. But wait, the city is sparing us from those dreaded shutdowns of the busy thoroughfare.

Drivers will only have to contend with the closure of the Don Valley Parkway for maintenance. The DVP from the Gardiner Expressway to Highway 401 is scheduled to be closed from 11 p.m. on April 21 to 5 a.m. on April 24.

However, before you jump for joy about the Gardiner, closures will be in effect on the expressway and the DVP for two events.

From 2 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 4, the expressway will be closed from the Humber Bridge to Carlaw Avenue on June for the Ride for Heart. The DVP from Highway 401 to the Gardiner will also be closed.

Then on July 23, the eastbound lanes of Gardiner will be closed from 2 a.m. to noon for the Toronto Triathlon Festival. The northbound lanes of the DVP from the Gardiner to Eglinton Avenue, as well as all ramps, will also be closed.

The city has not said why the spring maintenance on the Gardiner won’t be taking place this year.

Earlier this month, city officials said the ramp from the eastbound Gardiner Expressway to York, Bay and Yonge streets will be closed starting on April 17, as construction crews tear down the ramp and move it to Lower Simcoe.
