Cat reunited with California owner after migrating to Ontario

By Stella Acquisto

They say cats have nine lives, and this is the story of a tabby which had at least two — one in California and the other in Ontario.

Earlier this month, the Guelph Humane Society (GHS) was handed a female tabby after it was found in Morriston, Ont., 15 minutes south of Guelph. During its inspection, GHS did some digging and looked up whether or not the female cat had an owner, and it did.

“As with every stray we get in, we did the normal intake procedure, which includes a quick microchip scan,” said Bailey Wintermute of the GHS.

“And sure enough, she was chipped and the chip traced back to California, which kind of gave us all a bit of a turn.”

Turns out the furry friend belonged to a family in Watsonville, Calif,. It also had a name: BooBoo.

To put it into perspective, BooBoo’s journey from Watsonville to Morriston is about 4,290 kilometres, which is equivalent to a 39-hour drive.

GHS said it has no idea how the cat made its way from the U.S into Canada, but BooBoo is perfectly healthy, which is a good sign someone took care of her.

According to the family, BooBoo has been missing since 2013.

“We looked and looked and looked for her,” said Olga Chmelicek, adding she had no idea how BooBoo made it so far.

“That’s the crazy part. Oh man, I would like to know.”

Chmelicek met the GHS in a hotel in Buffalo, N.Y., on Friday and was reunited with BooBoo. They were due to fly back to California in the evening.
