Brampton man arrested in connection to Hamilton homicide

By News Staff & The Canadian Press

Hamilton police have arrested a suspect in Hamilton’s first homicide of the year after issuing an arrest warrant Sunday.

Brampton’s Antonio Charles, 30, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He is accused of killing 40-year-old Melvin Jn’Marie in the city’s east-end on Saturday.

Investigators were originally called to a disturbance in the area of Parkdale Ave. N. and Brittannia Ave., where they found Jn’Marie suffering from life-threatening injuries.

He was transported to Hamilton General Hospital and pronounced dead.

Police haven’t released his cause of death, but they say that the incident that led to his death “started as a minor altercation” and “quickly escalated.”

They say Jn’Marie likely knew his killer, and they don’t believe there’s a danger to the public at large.

A post-mortem was performed and the victim’s family has been notified.
