Peel police have one man in custody after approximately $12,000 was stolen from donation boxes at various mosques in Mississauga.

Officers believe the man robbed six separate religious buildings between June 4 and June 17. He either stole the locked donation box containing money or broke into the box and removed the money from inside.

Sometimes, he robbed the mosques when they were open, but on at least two occasions, he broke in to rob the mosques.

Ashraf Awad, 58, from Mississauga, is charged with five counts of theft under $5,000, one count of theft over $5,000, two counts of break and enter and theft, and a final charge of break and enter instruments.
