Crane rescue in downtown Toronto, man detained under Mental Health Act

By News Staff

A man has been detained under the Ontario Mental Health Act after he was seen on a crane in downtown Toronto.

He was seen scaling the construction equipment near Jarvis and Dundas streets around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Toronto police brought a psychiatrist to the scene and that doctor, along with a police negotiator, went up in a Toronto Fire aerial bucket to speak to the man.

After about three hours, he came down. The man, believed to be in his 50s, is in custody.

During the negotiations, power was cut to the streetcar tracks. Power has now been restored and Dundas is open.
