Police call fire at Trinity Baptist Church in Burlington suspicious, investigation launched

By News Staff, The Canadian Press

An investigation is underway after Trinity Baptist Church in Burlington was heavily damaged in a fire early on Wednesday morning that police have deemed suspicious. No one was hurt.

The fire began at 4372 Appleby Line, between Highway 407 and Britannia Road, around 1:15 a.m.

The Burlington Fire department managed to douse the flames, but not before the structure suffered extensive damage, police said.

The cause of the fire and the cost of the damage is not yet known.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has launched an investigation.

Appleby Line remains closed in both directions at No. 2 Sideroad.

The church was originally built in 1891 as a Methodist church, became a United church, and was sold to the current Baptist congregation in 1975.
