Students in Oakville, Burlington could face shortage of school bus drivers

The back-to-school transition may be complicated by a shortage of school bus drivers in Oakville and Burlington.

Halton Region’s public and Catholic school boards are working with local bus companies to try to minimize the impact on students.

Parents are encouraged to sign up for notifications on the Halton Student Transportation Services website before school starts.

The company says the anticipated shortage will mainly affect Oakville and, to a lesser extent, Burlington. Milton and Halton Hills are not affected.

Last September, nearly 3,000 students in Toronto were left stranded because of a driver shortage.

Two weeks ago, the province’s ombudsman released a harsh critique about the Toronto situation and issued 42 recommendations including developing a communication protocol to better inform parents.
