Cause of death determined for bison at High Park Zoo

By News Staff

The City of Toronto says test results have determined what killed a female bison at the High Park Zoo last month.

The University of Guelph’s Animal Health Laboratory says the cause of death for the 17-year-old female was Hemorrhagic Typhlocolitis, which consists of ulcerative lesions throughout the intestinal tract.

However, extensive testing was not able to identify a virus, bacteria or toxin within the animal usually associated with the disease.

The city says the bison was found to be in “good body condition with good muscle mass” and that a combination of age and “some other agent” was the reason for her death.

The bison was one of four at the zoo and the city says at present time, all other animals are in good health and body condition.

The zoo is also home to deer, llamas, peacocks, highland cattle and capybaras.
