St. Thomas police officer charged with sexually assaulting girl

By The Canadian Press

The Special Investigations Unit says a southwestern Ontario police officer is facing sex-related charges involving a girl.

The police watchdog agency says it received complaints early last month against a St. Thomas, Ont., police officer involving alleged assaults between January 2016 and January 2017.

The SIU says Const. Garry Christiansen is charged with one count each of sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, sexual exploitation and assault.

Christiansen was arrested Thursday and the SIU says he has been released on a number of conditions, including that he not communicate with the complainant.

He is to appear in court in St. Thomas on Oct. 17.

The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
