Toronto police have charged a 46-year-old secondary school teacher as part of a child luring and sexual exploitation investigation.
Investigators executed a search warrant in the Bloor Street West and Landsdowne Avenue area on Thursday, charging Gerard McGilly with numerous offences including child luring, sexual exploitation and making and possessing child pornography.
Police say McGilly has worked for a number of school boards since 1995. Currently he is a teacher for the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) at Bishop Allen Academy, where he’s been employed since 2008.
In an email, TCDSB Senior Coordinator John Yan told CityNews that McGilly has been placed on “home assignment” – a paid suspension pending the outcome of the investigation – as per the board’s collective agreement.
“The safety and wellbeing of all students remains our top priority. Mr. McGilly has been removed from his position at the Toronto Catholic District School Board. We will have counsellors available to any students and staff who may need support,” said the TCDSB in a statement.
McGilly was previously employed by the Dufferin-Peel Catcholic District School Board as an education assistant at St Francis Xavier Secondary School in Mississauga from 1995 to 2000. He has also previously worked as an administrative assistant at St. Francis Table, a community outreach centre, in Toronto from 2000 to 2006.
Police say McGilly is known to use the following usernames online:
- G-Note/G Note
- massive reggae/massivereggae
Investigators want to hear from anyone who may have experienced inappropriate contact from McGilly.
They are asked to call the Sex Crimes and Child Exploitation Section at 416-808-8500.
