Royal Canadian Legion’s poppy campaign kicks off Friday

The TTC will help the Royal Canadian Legion kick off its annual poppy campaign on Friday.

Grade six students from Davisville Public School will join veterans at North York Centre subway station at 11 a.m. for the launch.

The veterans will pin poppies on students to remind people to honour those who have served.

The TTC said all of its vehicles will pause for two minutes on Remembrance Day to honour those who have died in service.

On Monday, Governor General Julie Payette received the symbolic first poppy of the 2017 National Poppy Campaign.

The Royal Canadian Legion’s president David Flannigan made the presentation at Rideau Hall.

“We are honoured to welcome her excellency as our new patron,” Flannigan said in a statement released following the presentation.

“We will be guided by her words and her example – to reach for the stars and set our sights high in all that we do. When it comes to serving our nation’s veterans and their families, we will continue to work together to achieve great things.”

Funds raised from the campaign will be going back into communities across the country to help support veterans and their families.
