Thomson family tops Canada’s richest people list for 2018

Each year, the editors at Canadian Business put together the definitive annual guide to who is worth what. The rich, the super rich and the folks who have so much money they probably don’t even know how much – until they read The Rich 100.
We tally up their public holdings and calculate their private wealth to come up with our informed estimate as to their total wealth.
In this year’s 19th edition of the Rich 100, we explore the changing face of the super wealthy in Canada.
There are new names and lots of new money moving up the list. People like Joseph Tsai of Alibaba, who is now second to only the Thomson family.
Others rising rapidly made their fortunes in everything from tech to kids’ toys.
Meanwhile, the established money in this country, the household names like Weston, Reichman, Bronfman and various long-time executives with firms like Alimentation Couche-Tard are finding ways to hold onto their high ranks.
