Toronto-York Spadina subway extension set to open in 30 days

In exactly one month, the long awaited Toronto-York Spadina TTC subway extension is set to open, promising faster and more convenient service to commuters.

To mark the 30-day countdown, Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca, Mayor John Tory and other dignitaries were given a tour of the brand new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Downsview Park stations.

The new Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) is an expansion of Line 1, from Downsview Park Station to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre at Highway 7 in York Region and spans 8.6 kilometres. The extension includes six new subway stations – Downsview Park, Finch West, York University, Pioneer Village, Highway 407 and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – and added commuter parking lots as well as TTC, York Region and GO bus terminals.

As of Dec. 17, the extension will provide subway service beyond regional boundaries in Ontario for the very first time. In a release, the province said commuters will now be able to travel from Sheppard West Station to Vaughan Metropolitan station in 14 minutes.

Along with a faster commute, there’s also the promise of a cheaper one. Starting January 2018, all commuters will pay a reduced TTC fare of $1.50 with the use of a Presto card to transfer between GO Transit, the UP Express and the TTC.
