1 man shot, 2 officers injured in Scarborough home invasion

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding a police-involved shooting following an alleged home invasion in Scarborough on Friday night.

Toronto police were called to a residence in the Jarwick Drive and Benshire Drive area around 11:30 p.m. for reports of a home invasion.

Investigators say three or four masked men broke into a home and at least two of them were armed with guns.

When police arrived on scene, the suspects fled into Bendale Junior Public School and a short foot chase ensued in the schoolyard.

One of the suspects reportedly pointed a gun at the officers and a police officer discharged his firearm. A 25-year-old man was struck and taken into custody. He was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Two police officers were also treated for what’s believed to be minor injuries. It is not known how they were injured at this time.

Police say two or three suspects are still outstanding.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates incidents involving police in which someone is killed, injured or accused of sexual assault.
