A Brampton man faces 48 charges including seven counts of attempted murder in connection with five shootings in Toronto.
The shootings, which date back to the second week of January through last Sunday, took place in the city’s northwest end and Etobicoke.
In one case, a four-year-old girl and a 35-year-old man were sitting in a parked vehicle when the suspect allegedly shot at them. They were not injured in the shooting.
Supt. Ron Taverner told CityNews the suspect acted alone and investigators are looking into other incidents he may have been involved in.
“It’s very disturbing and understandably, the community is upset,” he said.
Taverner also said the shootings appear to be random and they are investigating a motive. He said none of the victims knew each other.
Toronto police arrested Adam Abdi, 20, on Monday, and also seized a firearm.
Timeline of the shootings
The first shooting happened around 4 p.m. on Jan. 9 in the Rathburn Road and The West Mall area. Police say a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl were inside a building when a man approached from the outside and shot at them several times. The man who was shot was not seriously hurt. The teen girl was not injured.
Then around 3 p.m. on Jan. 16, a 47-year-old man was standing outside in the Finch Avenue West and Islington Avenue area when a man allegedly shot at him. Police have not said if the shooting victim was injured.
Three of the five shootings happened between Saturday and Sunday — two of the shootings were on Sunday.
Two of the shootings also happened in the Finch and Islington area — the same located as the previous shooting. Around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, a 20-year-old man was walking in the area when the suspect got out of a vehicle and allegedly shot at the man.
The next day, around 3:30 p.m., police say the suspect got out of his car and allegedly shot at a 35-year-old man and a four-year-old girl who were sitting in a parked vehicle. They were not injured in the shooting.
Also on Sunday, police say a 19-year-old man was walking in the Rathburn Road and Renforth Drive area around 4:25 p.m. when another man drove up beside him and shot at him. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries but his condition has since improved.
