Not the ranking we want: Toronto named ‘rattiest’ city in Ontario

It is probably not the No. 1 standing we want, but for the second-straight year, Toronto has been named the “rattiest” city in the province.

The second-annual list was compiled by Orkin Canada, which bases its rankings on the number of commercial and residential rodent treatments carried out in 2017.

Ottawa, Mississauga, Scarborough, and Hamilton round out the top five cities. Below is a breakdown of the 25 most rattiest cities in Ontario.

The pest control company said last year was a “bumper year” for rats in the province and called the increase from 2016 significant.

Orkin is warning homeowners that rodents are very active at this time of year, and are telling homeowners to check any small holes or cracks in perimeter walls.

Below are some rat-repellent tips from Orkin:

  • Seal any cracks or holes in the foundation with weather-resistant sealant. Install weather stripping around windows and doors, as well as door sweeps
  • Keep shrubbery cut back at least one metre from the exterior walls of the home to eliminate any hiding spots for rodents
  • Eliminate any moisture sources, such as clogged gutters or water gathering in trash or recycling bins
