Canada Post investigating alleged incident of dropped mail

Someone in Oshawa may have to wait until spring to get their mail thanks to one very apathetic postal worker.

Security video submitted to CityNews shows what appears to be a Canada Post worker casually crossing a snow-covered lawn, while mail is falling to the ground. But instead of picking it up, the worker turns, looks at it and then appears to kick snow on top of it, before walking away.

The man who submitted the video wishes to remain anonymous because he fears the repercussions of being publicly tied to the incident. Kevin, who only wants to go by his first name, says he reviewed his security cameras after he found scraps of mail by his home.

“I was clearing my snow and I noticed there was papers coming out of the snow blowers chute,” he said.

“All I know for sure is there was some sort of delivery notice, and there was also what appeared to be Mastercard stuff, it was chewed up and wet.”

Kevin said the postal worker doesn’t appear to be his usual delivery person, but it appears three to four items were left behind in the snow.

He said he contacted Canada Post about the issue, but the incident, which happened last Wednesday, has triggered privacy concerns especially since it occurred during tax season.

“You don’t know what’s there, it could be a credit card report, income tax, or a cheque,” Kevin said.

“It could be someone’s social insurance number on there, this time of year that’s a concern, everybody is getting their T4s.”

A Canada Post spokesperson told CityNews an investigation has been launched, as it works to address the matter internally and identify the route.

This is obviously unacceptable and does not reflect the hard work of our employees,” the spokesperson said in an email.
