Police have charged a Scarborough elementary school teacher after reports a boy was sexually assaulted earlier this month.
It’s alleged the teacher, who works at the Islamic Foundation School, took the 10-year-old boy out of school around 11:15 a.m. on Feb. 16 and drove him to an area near Neilson Road and McLevin Avenue.
Police said the man sexually assaulted the child and then took him back to school.
On Tuesday, officers arrested Saleh Momla, 24, of Toronto, and charged him with sexual interference and sexual assault.
The Islamic Foundation of Toronto, which runs the school, said as soon as it learned of the alleged incident, it contacted police and the Children’s Aid Society.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our former full-time Hifz teachers, Saleh Momla, is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault,” the organization said. “He is no longer employed at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto.
“We want to reassure all parents and the community that we as a school are very vigilant with the safety and security of our children.”
The foundation said it is planning to develop policies and practices to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Momla was due in court on Wednesday.
