Man allegedly sets fire to Toronto apartment, barricades himself inside

A 34-year-old man is facing several charges, including arson, after a fire in midtown Toronto that injured three people and killed pets.

The fire broke out at a three-storey building on Yonge Street near Belsize Drive, north of Davisville Avenue, around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Toronto police say the suspect threatened to cause a fire and harm some pets. He allegedly set fire to an apartment and then barricaded himself inside.

Three people were injured in the fire. One person was taken to hospital to be treated for serious smoke inhalation.

A second person had minor smoke inhalation. A third person — a male — suffered burns to his hands.

It is not known if one of the three injured included the suspect.

Officials said some residents were displaced because of fire, smoke and water damage.

Bradley Oliver, 34, from Toronto, was arrested and charged with seven offences: arson having disregard for human life, arson causing property damage, uttering threats to cause property damage, uttering threats to harm animals, kill, maim or wound animals, assault, and mischief over $5,000.

The Ontario fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate.
