A 30-year-old man died after he fell nine storeys down a garbage chute at a condo building in midtown Toronto.
Emergency crews were called to Erskine Avenue, near Mount Pleasant Road and Eglinton Avenue, around 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Toronto police say they are investigating the death as suspicious, but do not believe foul play is involved at this point.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs says Ontario’s Building Code includes safety requirements for garbage and laundry chutes, but they do not apply to existing buildings.
“Chute safety is addressed through requirements for automatic closures on garbage chute intake openings, and a requirement that they latch after use,” ministry representative Praveen Senthinathan said in an email.
“There is no maximum size established for the opening. The larger the chute, the larger the required opening.”
