A major subway thoroughfare in downtown Toronto was evacuated for several hours Saturday afternoon following reports of a suspicious package on the subway platform.
Toronto police say a TTC employee called just before 4 p.m. to say someone had left a case, similar in size to a camera case, unattended on the southbound platform of the Yonge-Bloor station.
Service on both Line 1 and 2 was suspended and the bomb squad was called in as a precaution to investigate.
Shortly before 7 p.m., police confirmed that the package had been ‘rendered safe’. Shortly thereafter full subway service resumed on both Line 1 and 2.
Police cruisers, ambulances and fire trucks on scene here at Yonge and Bloor. No access to the subway because of what is believed to be a suspicious package. Shuffle buses are on hand but lots of people and lots of confusion. More on this story tonight on @CityNews at 6 and 11. pic.twitter.com/yrv0xvPKQ3
