1 dead in crash on Hwy. 401 in Pickering

One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Pickering.

The crash happened in the eastbound collector lanes near Liverpool Road on Wednesday. Ontario provincial police were called to the scene around 1 a.m.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

It appears three vehicles were heading eastbound when one of the vehicles side-swiped another. The initial vehicle then crashed into the back of a stationary truck that was setting up pylons and barrels for a lane closure, and rolled over.

The person killed was in the vehicle that rolled over.

Police are investigating all factors that may have led to the crash, including speed.

The collector lanes were closed from Port Union to Brock roads, but reopened just before 8 a.m.
