Truck driver charged with careless driving in Hwy. 400 crash

The driver of a tractor-trailer has been charged with careless driving after a crash on Highway 400 that closed a stretch of the highway from Barrie to Innisfil.

The crash involving two tractor-trailers occurred on the northbound lanes of the 400 approaching Mapleview Drive in Barrie.

One transport truck was travelling northbound when it crashed into the centre guardrail and jackknifed across both northbound and southbound lanes. Its fuel tank also ruptured, spilling diesel across the highway.

Another transport truck that was heading southbound ended up in the ditch.

The driver of the truck that jackknifed has been charged with careless driving, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.

No injuries were reported.

The highway remains closed in both directions between Mapleview in Barrie and Innisfil Beach Road in Innisfil.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Earlier, Schmidt said drivers could expect a dicey commute due to the weather.

“We’ve got rain falling all across the GTA. We’ve got snow and slush still across the highways, on the shoulders. We’ve got sheets of ice covering many parts of the highway,” he said.

“We have multiple collisions involving transport trucks.”
