Syrian refugees donate blood as way to thank Canada for taking them in

HALIFAX – Dozens of Syrian refugees literally gave of themselves as a way of giving thanks for being taken in by Canada.

Mohammad Harb says 61 refugees donated blood at a Canadian Blood Services clinic in Halifax on Saturday, and more were expected later in the day.

Harb, whose family met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last year, says he was pleased that so many people came to donate to say, ‘Thank you, Canada.'”

Harb told Global News he left Syria out of fear for his children and family.

Provincial Immigration Minister Lena Diab praised the group for the gesture that was done “in the hope of giving life to others because they believe they have been given a life — a new life here in this province.”

Peter MacDonald of Canadian Blood Services says the donations could potentially help more than 180 people.
