A 38-year-old Brampton man is dead and three other people are in hospital after a crash involving a stolen car on the border of Brampton and Vaughan.
Police were called to Highway 50 near Countryside Drive in Bolton just before 1 a.m. on Thursday. Peel police were the first to arrive at the scene, but York police later took over the investigation.
The car, which police say was reported stolen, was travelling north on the highway when it crashed into a ditch.
Four men were inside the stolen vehicle. The three other men were removed from the vehicle by firefighters and taken to hospital, one of them suffering critical injuries. The other two men were taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Workers at a nearby tractor-trailer yard believe the car, a black Honda, may be connected to an alleged attempted theft at the yard.
Workers say a similar theft has happened at the yard in the past, but it is not known if any arrests were made in that case.
“Last year, too, they did that. We have a good gate in the front with a keypad on it. Last time, they knocked it out with something and they tried to get out. We just got the [new] gate yesterday […] not put on yet, and this happened again,” the unidentified man said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police say the crash happened after the car had “an interaction” with a second vehicle. Some witnesses say a driver from the transport yard chased the car out off the property and onto the roadway, but that has not been confirmed by police.
