North York woman drowns after canoe overturns on Lake Couchiching

OPP say a 25-year old North York woman has drowned after the canoe she was in overturned on Lake Couchiching in Orillia.

Investigators say two women were in the canoe approximately 100 metres from the shore when it overturned unexpectedly at around 12 p.m on Sunday. Both were not wearing life jackets.

One of the women was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The other woman was cleared by paramedics at the scene, but went to the hospital on her own.

The name of the victim is being withheld until next of kin is notified and a post-mortem is conducted.
