U of T student from China dies in Scarborough house fire

An 18-year-old University of Toronto student originally from China has died after a two-alarm fire at a home in Scarborough. Three other people were injured.

Crews were called to Haida and Lash courts, near Morningside Avenue and Ellesmere Road, around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Fire officials are not sure what caused the fire but say they believe it started in the basement.

The body of the young woman was found in a bedroom on the second floor of the home. Officials had originally classified her as unaccounted for.

Fire officials said all four people living in the home were tenants and are students at the nearby Scarborough campus of University of Toronto.

One of the tenants, a man believed to be in his 20s, jumped from a second-floor window to escape the fire.

Officials said they don’t know if there were working smoke alarms inside the house or not.

Paramedics said a woman in her 20s suffered serious burns and two others were taken to hospital for minor smoke inhalation.
