Bear repellent spray sends 5 students to hospital

Five students had to be taken to hospital Friday after an incident with bear repellent in Maple.

Concerned parents told CityNews one student found a can of bear repellent in the schoolyard of Divine Mercy Catholic Elementary School.

The student then sprayed the bear repellent into the air and got into the eyes and clothing of students.

School officials assisted the students and five kids were taken to hospital.

The York Catholic District School Board told CityNews they have reported the incident to York police and an investigation has been launched.

They add they will be addressing the incident with their students.

“We take all matters concerning the health and safety of our students very seriously. School administration has informed York Regional Police about the bear repellent found on school grounds and are investigating. School staff are addressing the incident with their students and are stressing the importance of not touching or picking up strange items and instead, notifying school staff immediately. Parents received a notification about today’s incident.”

The children injured have been released from hospital and they believe all of the students will be back at school on Monday.
