1 dead, officer wounded in Scarborough shooting

One man is dead and a Toronto police officer has been injured after an overnight shooting in Scarborough.

Emergency crews were called to Hymus Road and Warden Avenue, between Eglinton and St. Clair avenues, just after midnight Thursday for reports of a person with a gun.

According to the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is investigating the incident, officers located the man in a vehicle outside of a pub.

The SIU said there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the man, and the man was struck multiple times.

Paramedics said the man suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer also suffered a gunshot wound during the incident and was rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Paramedics said the officer’s injuries could have been much worse had be not been wearing a bulletproof vest.

Police Chief Mark Saunders couldn’t speak in specifics about the incident because of the SIU mandate, but praised the work of his officers and the life-saving equipment they were wearing.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work that the officers that attended (did). I’m also grateful that our officers were well equipped,” Saunders said.

“I think in today’s environment we can’t take for granted the importance of the equipment that’s provided.”

Saunders said the officer was okay and would be released from hospital at some point in time.

He also spoke about the worry over the recent gun violence in the city.

“Nobody wants anyone to get shot. We’re in communities where we have young kids playing, summer’s coming up and the fact that people will pull a gun out and use a firearm is of great concern.”

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about this incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
