GTA under heat warning ahead of Canada Day long weekend

A heat warning is in effect for the GTA ahead of the Canada Day long weekend.
Environment Canada issued the warning on Thursday, saying it will be “the most significant heat event in the past few years.”
Daytime highs could reach the mid-30s, with humidex values into the mid-40s. The heat could last through next week.
Overnight low temperatures will only fall to the low- to mid-20s, except in some rural areas, providing little or no relief from the heat.
On Friday, Toronto’s medial officer of health issued a heat warning for the city. During the heat warning, the city opens its cooling centres.
Hydro One says they don’t anticipate any impact on their system during the prolonged heat warning.
“Hydro One’s infrastructure is designed to operate normally throughout warm temperatures and we do not anticipate any impact to our system as a result of the heat expected this weekend. As always, Hydro One’s crews are available 24/7 to respond to outages on the system should they occur.
The hot weather will be an apt start to summer vacation for thousands of elementary school children, whose last day of school was Thursday.
And while classes are done for the next two months, city council is thinking of new ways to make school zones safer.
More speed bumps, speed signs, and additional safety indicators are on their way to a school zone near you. On Wednesday, council voted to double its spending on its Vision Zero Plan, which aims to reduce the number of fatalities on city streets to zero by 2021.
Overall, council approved $22 million in new spending — which includes $13 million to accelerate the plan.
