Man killed on Hwy 404 driving the wrong way before head-on crash: police

By News Staff

Provincial police say the driver killed in a fatal head-on crash overnight on Highway 404 was driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at Elgin Mills Road around midnight on Tuesday.

Provincial police say it appears a driver got onto the 404 using a NB off-ramp then drove the wrong way in those NB lanes before slamming into an oncoming vehicle. The wrong-way driver, a 64-year-old Toronto man was killed in the crash.

The other driver, a 22-year-old man, is in serious condition in hospital.

Both vehicles involved were heavily damaged in the crash.

All northbound lanes of the highway were closed overnight at Elgin Mills. One southbound lane was also closed. The highway reopened just before 7 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
