Teen accused of impaired driving in stolen golf cart

Whether it’s an 18-wheeler or a golf cart, York Regional Police are reminding motorists that impaired driving in any and all vehicles is illegal.

The reminder comes after two teenagers were apprehended driving a stolen golf cart in the Town of Georgina, according to police.

Police responded to a call at an address on Wexford Drive near Pollock Road and Woodbine Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

When officers arrived, the two suspects jumped off the golf cart and tried to run away but were quickly arrested.

The 16-year-old male driver was charged with impaired driving by drugs as well as other offences. Both he and his 18-year-old passenger were charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

Police are reminding drivers that an impaired driving charge in any vehicle results in an immediate 90-day driver’s licence suspension. Plus, for six months any vehicle the person drives must have an ignition interlock device. The accused also has to attend a mandatory education or treatment program — all of which is immediate and separate from any court rulings.

In a release on Wednesday, York police Chief Eric Jolliffe called the incident unacceptable.

“It’s alarming that prior to the pending legalization of cannabis we are seeing this spike of drivers impaired by drugs,” he said. “We will continue to use education, enforcement and every tool at our disposal in our fight against impaired driving.”
