Ontario government to spend $182M to replace nine aging OPP detachments

By The Canadian Press

The Ontario government is replacing nine aging provincial police detachments, with construction set to start this fall.

The province says it will spend $182 million to build the new facilities, located in Moosonee, Fort Frances, Hawkesbury, Huron County, West Parry Sound, Manitoulin Island, Mississauga, Marathon and Orillia.

The government says the upgrades will address health and safety issues, and issues due to lack of space.

Community Safety Minister Michael Tibollo says state-of-the-art police facilities are an important part of keeping communities safe.

The contract to design, build and finance the new facilities has been awarded to Bird Construction Inc.

The province says bundling the construction under one project helps save money by getting bulk pricing on materials.
