Police arrest 23-year-old suspect in ‘senseless’ drive-by shooting

Just hours after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for a 23-year-old Toronto man wanted in a brazen drive-by shooting, he has been arrested.

Shamoi Palmer has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting on Weston Road.

Police have identified the victim as 32-year-old Jermaine Titus of Toronto. They say he was driving north on Weston Road, when it appears shots were fired from an SUV heading in the opposite direction.

A passenger was also in the car at the time but was not injured.

Patterson called Titus’ death “senseless,” noting he had no gang affiliations or prior police convictions. Police add Titus leaves behind a “loving family and a four year old son.”

Police believe this was not a random shooting and that Titus was targeted.

Patterson noted that at least three shots were fired with one fatal shot hitting the car. He called the shooting “extremely dangerous” and said the outcome could have resulted in more than just one innocent death.

“When the fatal shot was fired, if it had traveled outside of the vehicle there was another occupied vehicle on the other side. There was people in the area, cyclists, children enjoying their summer holidays… this could have been an awful tragedy.”

Police have appealed to the public to help trace Titus’ final 24 hours to help determine what may have led up to the shooting.
