By News Staff

A 16-year-old boy is dead after a shooting in Scarborough on Friday evening.

Police responded to reports of gunshots on Bellamy Road North, near Eglinton Avenue East and Markham Road, around 6:45 p.m.

The teen was taken to a trauma centre where he was later pronounced dead.

“He’s a nice kid. As far as I know he wasn’t involved in any gangs or anything like that,” a man identified only as John told CityNews.

John added he saw the victim approximately 45 minutes before the shooting occurred as the boy stopped by his apartment to use his phone.

“Why would somebody shoot him? I think it’s a case of mistaken identity,” John said. “It’s a shame. I was shocked.”

Police said they are searching for two male suspects who reportedly fled the area in a dark SUV.

The first suspect is described as wearing all-dark clothing with a hoodie. The second suspect is described as wearing a dark hooded top and light-coloured shorts.

This is Toronto’s 77th homicide of the year.
