Coun. Mammoliti tweet on religion and politics draws response from Ricky Gervais

By News Staff

Giorgio Mammoliti has been known to court controversy, but a recent tweet by the longtime city councillor that urged voters to ask candidates if they believe in God has received over a thousand responses, including a sarcastic rebuke from one of the entertainment industry’s biggest stars and noted atheists.

In a tweet posted Sunday, Mammoliti seemed to argue against the separation of Church and State, blaming a lack of religious values in politics for the recent spate of fatal shootings in Toronto.

He urged voters in the upcoming municipal election to ask candidates whether they “believe in God” adding that “religion and politics DO MIX.”

Comedian, writer, and director Ricky Gervais, who is an atheist, tweeted a response to Mammoliti, saying “Exactly. People who believe in god are never violent. That’s why there are no religious people in prison.”

Gervais wasn’t alone. The tweet has over 1,300 responses, most of them angry with some poking fun at the councillor’s attendance record at city hall.
