It is the last full day of summer, but despite the steamy temperatures in the forecast, it is not going to be a great day for hanging out on the patio after work.

While Mother Nature is bringing the intense heat, that also means some wild weather — humidity, windy conditions and risk of thunderstorms.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the GTA, including Toronto, saying thunderstorms are expected to develop Friday afternoon, with the potential for up to 100 km/h wind gusts.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the national weather agency said.

A tornado watch has also been issued for Peterborough and the surrounding area.

The thunderstorms are expected to move out of the area by early evening.

680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said the GTA will see showers and thunderstorms at times, especially for the late afternoon and early evening. Although the high will be 30 C, the humidity will make it feel like 38 C.

She said the the strong winds and storms will continue into the evening.

For those who don’t like the heat, autumn officially arrives at 9:54 p.m. on Saturday. And with it comes fresh and cooler air, as well as sunshine. The high for the weekend will be in the high teens.
