SIU investigating after man, 32, fatally shot at Burlington gas bar

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a man was killed in a police-involved shooting in Burlington.

The SIU says Ontario Provincial Police police were attempting to locate a man who had been involved in a motor vehicle collision when they received a call around 5 a.m. about a suspicious man in the bathroom of the gas station located at Appleby Line and Harvester Road, just south of the QEW.

When the man exited the bathroom, there was an exchange of gunfire between him, four Halton Regional Police officers and one OPP officer.

The SIU says a 32-year-old man was fatally shot by police.

Two Halton officers suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries, both as a result of the shootout with the suspect. Only one of the two officers involved discharged his weapon.

Both officers were taken to hospital for treatment. An update from Halton police said the officers were “in good spirits and in good hands.”

Halton police say there is no further risk to public safety at this time.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
