Three people were killed and two seriously injured in a head-on crash near Port Perry, Ont., in Scugog overnight.

It happened around 1:15 a.m. Saturday on Highway 7/12 near Scugog Line 4.

A northbound SUV drifted into the southbound lanes and collided head-on with another car.

The scene was absolutely devastating,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

Three people from the southbound car — a 59-year-old man and 64-year-old woman from Goodwood and a 44-year-old woman from Port Perry — died at the scene.

A 41-year-old woman from Goodwood who was also in the southbound car was taken to hospital in critical condition. The driver of the SUV, a 68-year-old man from Greenbank, had serious injuries.

“It is heartbreaking to know that three lives have been lost on a collision that right now does appear to be preventable,” Schmidt said.

“Sadly, officers are out … today knocking on doors letting them know that loved ones won’t be making it home ever again.”

Road and weather conditions do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to police.

No charges have been laid, but officers continue to investigate.
