A 23-year-old driver is accused of being impaired by drugs after an SUV collided with a tractor-trailer in Markham early Friday morning.

York regional police were called to Highway 7 and Commerce Valley Drive, near Highway 404, around 3:30 a.m.

It appears the SUV side-swiped the truck and rolled several times.

Two people were treated for minor injuries.

Police say they believe the driver of the SUV, who is from Markham, was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.

“We are confident in saying that the driver, we do believe, had consumed cannabis and possibly other things as well,” said Const. Andy Pattenden. “At this point, it’s one of a possible intoxicating substances may have played a part in this collision.”

The driver is facing five charges including impaired driving by drug, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while under suspension.

“We are concerned that the recent legalization of recreational cannabis will result in more incidents of impaired driving,” said Chief Eric Jolliffe. “We are urging anyone that has used cannabis, any other type of drug, or consumed alcohol, to not get behind the wheel.”
