The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a 23-year-old man was shot as police tried to arrest him in Etobicoke.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said police went to a residence on Willowridge Road, near Martin Grove Road and Eglinton Avenue West, to arrest a man.

The SIU said gunfire was exchanged between the man and the police officer. The man was shot multiple times.

The man was found suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body and rushed to hospital in serious condition.

The SIU said his injuries are not life-threatening.

Police said one suspect was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered at the scene. It is not clear is the man arrested is the person who was shot.

In a tweet around 11:15 p.m., police said they were called to the scene after 10-20 gunshots were heard in the area. At that time, they did not mention that police were involved. Just over an hour later, police said the “SIU has invoked their mandate.”

However, the details of what led to the shooting was not made known until the SIU released its update just before 7 a.m. on Thursday.
