Man facing 13 charges in human trafficking investigation

By News Staff

A Brampton man has been arrested and charged with human trafficking after allegedly forcing a minor into the sex trade last year.

Toronto police began investigating in late December and say a 17-year-old girl was trafficked by a 26-year-old man throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

They say she was allegedly forced to abide by the rules he imposed on her and he used intimidation and fear to control her actions and movements. He also produced a firearm to ensure she complied with his demands and she was forced to turn over her earnings to him.

On Dec. 28, the man was arrested in a joint effort by Toronto and Peel police forces.

Kristan Peter Miller was charged with 13 counts including forcible confinement, procuring persons under 18 and trafficking in persons under 18.

He appeared in a Toronto courtroom on Friday. Anyone with further information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Police say they are concerned there may be more alleged victims and are encouraging any and all affected individuals to come forward and report human trafficking to police.

“We want to make sure that everyone has access to support services and an exit strategy, regardless of their decision to proceed criminally,” they said in a release.
