From the hardcourt to the studio: an NBA star’s music journey

By Lindsay Dunn

What do Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal and Kevin Durant all have in common? Besides being elite basketball players, they all released music at one point during their NBA career.

And now, the most recent athlete to delve into the music world is Indiana Pacers star Victor Oladipo.

“I knew I had a good voice probably when I was in high school,” Oladipo told CityNews. “My friends kept telling me how good I was and I really only started to take it seriously two years ago.”

The 2018 All-Star released his debut album “V.O” and admits going from the hardcourt to the studio was a bit daunting.

“I was a little nervous but I got pretty good feedback. It was an exciting moment, doing something like that kind of helps you mentally and helps you realize you can’t really control people liking your music or not,” said Oladipo. “It’s just based on your feelings and if one person likes it, that’s really what it’s all about.”

Torontonian and former Raptor Cory Joseph plays alongside Oladipo with the Indiana Pacers and almost made his music debut.

“Cory came to the studio a few times when I was recording the songs so he knew them before they came out and I was going to put him on a track but we couldn’t figure out which one for his voice,” explained Oladip. “But, next year we will see.”

Oladipo says he doesn’t have any plans in the near future to tour his new album.
