Travellers to U.S. should expect long custom lines at Pearson Airport

By News Staff

Travellers heading to the U.S. are being asked to arrive at least three hours early to morning flights due to long lines for U.S. customs.

Robin Smith, a spokesperson with GTAA, said the wait times are fluctuating through out the day, but, “the morning is when we have the highest concentration of flights so that is when we are seeing the longest wait times.”

After 10 a.m., travellers can arrive two hours before a fight’s departure time, which is what is recommended on a regular basis.

Smith said it’s possible the reason for longer lines is fewer customs agents due to the U.S. government shutdown.

Customers and Border Protection officers are deemed essential workers during the shutdown and are working unpaid. They are unable to take any sick days or vacation.

He said they are working closely with the Customers and Border Protection Agency to make sure they have all the resources they need.

Smith added the long customs lines could also be caused by travellers heading back to the United States at the end of their holidays.
